A milestone in studies of Cuban art.

We refer to the book 'The Carlos Enriquez Painter of Cuban Ballads' by Juan A. Martínez. In a few weeks will be a year of its publication by Cernuda Art Gallery and we believe that has received little, if any, critical attention.

The book in large format [9 x 12 "] has more than 300 pages, an introduction and twelve chapters, an appendix with letters and other documents and a detailed chronography, an extensive bibliography and finally making it on by itself an essential work: hundreds of full color reproductions of paintings of Carlos Enriquez organized chronologically and excellent quality, it makes a noticeable difference with the work Previous JA Martinez, "Cuban Art and National Identity: The Vanguardia Painters, 1927-1950", which only consisted of eight color illustrations and 52 small black and white illustrations poorly reproduced.

Eva en el baño [1940] The book is a thorough and rigorous investigation of becoming life and painting of Carlos Enriquez and presents the artist in his human side to avoid falling into a simple anecdote. The book is the product of more than ten years of diligent investigative work, interpretation and evaluation of the paintings.

Already in the first chapter we are framing the conflict and powerful personality the painter over the work we were informed of their social background and also his rejection of it, belligerent attitudes and iconoclastic, artistic training, influences deeply absorbed in his art of Cuba, without falling into any false stereotyped and folklore, and finally their influence on the evolution of painting in Cuba.

butt It is important to analyze the late work of Carlos Enriquez critics generally considered of lesser value and of little interest even though in this period the basic elements of his paintings are held: the female nude, the palms, horses, peasants from the thematic point of view and technical drawing strength and transparency is also evident with vigor. I would add that some of these works are reminiscent of Chagall, see for example 'Carousel' in 1951, 'Race Horse', 1953, among others.

Needless to recommend the book, is a work essential.
